Hello, it seems like you've been doing the right thing and learning through your own research. I've mentioned in the above post that Dr Kendrick opened my eyes to the cholesterol dogma. There are plenty of other doctors and medical experts who have written about the cholesterol > CVD hypothesis being a myth and about statins being not just useless, but downright dangerous. I took the plunge after using my own judgment and logic, despite personal worries and concerns, but it is something you need to be prepared for, having balanced what you perceive as the negatives and positives of both arguments. My book discusses the issue quite a bit, with links to various medical resources and informative reads. Below you'll find a link to an excellent article that is both well-written and well-referenced. Wish you all the best, whatever you do.

Hi. Funny how I found your blog the day after going to my cardiologist. Just over two years ago I got a heart infection from pneumonia that gave me viral cardiomyopathy. I have been taking a beta-blocker and a medication to lower my blood pressure - even though the only time it is remotely elevated is at the doctors, I agreed. Once again I was given a prescription for Lipitor because of high cholesterol and triglycerides. I eat a mostly low-carb, grain-free diet and am concerned about taking a statin, even though most of the research shows it is safe and good for you even... do you have any advice/good research sources to help someone in making a decision?

Hey Helen, welcome on board the keto train!!!!! You're gonna have so much fun! Unlike other 'diets' this is a fabulous way of life. Brilliant choice and brilliant results already! Well done you!!!! P.S. There will come a point when you weight loss will stall... just drop the fat element a bit and you'll continue to do well. Thank you so much for your kind comments. Best of luck. And do reach out if you need any help with anything. :)

Antya, I've discovered your blog today and am so excited. The recipes look amazing! I've just ordered lupin flour and fiberflour and can't wait to get cooking.

I started eating keto in July following a blood test which indicated my blood sugars had moved from the previously pre-diabetic range into the diabetic range. I immediately cut out sugar completely and my goal is to lose 5 stone. I was aiming for 2lbs a week: in 8 weeks I've lost just short of 18lbs meaning I'm losing around 2.25lbs a week!

In addition, a second blood test 2 weeks ago revealed that my blood sugar levels have dropped significantly to the bottom end of the pre-diabetic range, on the cusp of "normal".

I've honestly never felt healthier. I love eating low carb and high fat and I never feel hungry .

Thank you for adding to my recipe repertoire!

Thanks for the response and well wishes! I see what you mean. All of my other markers and ratios are excellent, just like you said, so I know I shouldn't worry but it's hard! I have done lots of reading on this as well though and agree with you. Too bad modern medicine is behind on this. Anyway, it's so nice to see someone in my situation doing so well. You are an inspiration! :)

In reply to Lisa.

Lisa! Welcome to my blog!!! Another FH ticking time bomb...loool! My lipid profile is still showing elevated TC, HDL and LDL, but the improved ratios mean there's no concern. Even if there had been no improvement, I still wouldn't worry, because triglycerides are way more important. They are now recognised as a much better assessment risk for CVD, together with CrP - which indicates inflammation levels. Also, your LDL may well go down as you become truly keto-adapted (which can take up to 12 months, apparently) - at least that's what anecdotal studies suggest. The one thing I cannot stress enough is how important it is to reduce inflammation with intelligent nutrition, by eating good, natural, unadulterated, low carb foods, healthy fats, good quality protein and fibrous veggies to improve your microbiome (another area that's gaining a lot of attention lately, as it seems that our colony of friendly bacteria affects the whole body). You sound like you're going through what I went through, except you've discovered low carb a lot sooner than I did. I wish you all the best!

Hi! I’ve just come across your website now and I’m so happy I did! Not only for the recipes but because I also have Familial Hypercholesterolemia. Your story sounds just like mine - I’m 33 with a little girl and have been made to feel like I’m a ticking time bomb as well. I actually started statins when I was 23 but stopped them 4 years ago. I’ve done a lot of reading and have been following Keto now for about 5 months. One question though - you said your lipids are now normal? All of my lipid markers are the best they’ve ever been EXCEPT for LDL which is actually higher on the diet. With FH I thought it will never go down? Maybe you didn’t actually have the gene mutation?

P.s. you look amazing!

In reply to Constance.

Hi Constance! Thank you for your comments. You're right to aim for triglycerides to be low, but you should also keep an eye on CrP, which is a strong indicator of inflammation. Keto sorted both for me. I have come across several success stories in relation to thyroid issues, but it's not something I can vouch from personal experience. I am surprised you gained weight on keto the first time round. My advice is to use a macro assessment tool like THIS ONE to determine your parameters and then a reliable macro tracking app to make sure you don't exceed anything. Try to stick to home cooked food, because packaged options often contain hidden carbs, and use treats occasionally, rather then daily, as they quickly pile on the calories. Oh and don't bother with fat bombs and extra fats, otherwise your fat stores just won't get used up. If you want to make sure about what to eat, check out my new Book. Very best of luck to you.

Just found your blog, and I like what I see. I've been arguing with my primary care physician about statins and their value (or lack thereof). Both my parents took them, both had increasing muscle weakness, and as you point out, and as I've pointed out to my doctor, "Isn't the heart a muscle???" Both of them ended up with congenital heart failure, heart attacks and a stroke.

Anyway, I tried keto from Jan thru March this year and gained about 12 pounds. I'm trying it again right now and having a really hard time keeping my carbs to 50 gr/day. I'm hoping that you recipes will make the difference. I'm 61, and by my birthday in November I need to get my LDL down and my triglycerides down and hopefully lose a bunch of my fat. I take thyroid medicine and have since I was 50. If I could dump it, I would.
